Free Programs for Creating and Editing Graphics

General

- This is a free, full-featured image manipulation program and is often used as an alternative to Photoshop or Paintshop Pro. The interface is very difficult to work with, however, which makes it rather difficult to learn and use. This will be rehauled in the 2.6 release, which should greatly improve the usability.

- A free image editiing program with a simple, clean interface. The program has all the basic tools, and some nice plug-ins. My favorite is "Ink Sketch," which makes photographs look like works of art.. The interactive gradient tool is amazing.

Special Effects

- A Stand-alone freeware program for easily creating realistic water ripples. Can be applied to jpgs or avi movie clips. You can also add animated falling snow or rain to an image or clip. Completed animations can be saved as Flash, AVI or GIF files, as well as a set of still BMP or JPG images.
