A Guide to Free Resources for Web Designers
The Internet is a treasure-trove of free images, scripts, tutorials and other resources for Web designers. This site contains listings of some of the best links for these resources.
This is by no means a complete listing of all the assets available: I've tried to include only those that are of high quality, allow commercial use and are truly free. Things change sometimes, so be sure to read the terms before using any of the resources listed here.
If you find any broken links, or if you have any suggestions for new listings, please leave a note in the guestbook at the bottom of this page.
The Original Amber Room
The Amber Room was one of the most fabulous treasures of all time, a room walled in glowing panels of amber, once called the "eight wonder of the world."
The Amber panels had originally been commissioned by the Prussian King, Friedrich I. His son presented it to Peter the Great and they were eventually installed in the Catherine Palace in St. Petersburg by Tsarina Elizabeth of Russia.
During World War II, The Amber Room was dismantled by the Germans and transported to Konigsberg, a Prussian city on the Baltic. The city was heavily bombed by the allies, and the castle in which the Amber Room had been stored was damaged by fire. No trace of the Amber Room was found when the Allies captured Konigsberg in 1945. It is not known whether it was destroyed or was hidden during the last days of the War.
A replica of the Amber Room now graces the Catherine Palace in St. Petersburg.
